How to Create a Poll in Slack

Preparation: First-Time Setup

Before continuing, install the MegaVote Slack App in your workspace. If you haven't done so already, add it to your Slack workspace (it's free). If you've already installed the @MegaVote Slack app, skip to Create a Poll in Slack with a Question-Only Command.

After installing MegaVote, you will have several ways to create a poll or vote in your Slack workspace. Let's get started!

Create a Poll in Slack with a Question-Only Command

Enter the command in the Slack message box for the channel where you want to post the poll. @MegaVote will display a Poll/Vote creation form that you can review and complete before posting.

When you enter the command without a question, a blank creation form appears.

/megavote

When you add a question after the command, the creation form is prefilled with your Poll/Vote question.

HINT: This makes it easier to paste or compose a complex question with Slack's emoji editor.

Create a Poll in Slack with a Question and Options

The previous section showed how to create a Poll/Vote with a simple Slack command. @MegaVote also lets you provide the question and its related options in a single command.

This approach makes it easy to paste long or complex Poll/Vote commands from your notes, our open library, or a help guide. The example below creates a complete Poll/Vote with a question and four options:

/megavote "What's the best way to start a Monday morning? 🤗 🔥" "☕️Coffee" "🍩 Donut" "🛌 Sleeping in" "🤔 Still thinking"

NOTE: Enclose each part of the command in double quotation marks: /megavote "QUESTION" "OPTION1" "OPTION2"...

Create a Poll in Slack with a Shortcut

Slack shortcuts help you discover quick commands available in your workspace's channels.

Open the shortcut menu by selecting the small ➕ on the left side of the Slack message box. Type or select the @MegaVote command to open the Poll/Vote creation form and start composing your Poll/Vote.

Create a Poll in Slack from a Message

Sometimes you post a question in a channel and then realize that a Poll/Vote would work better than a long Slack thread.

To engage people and visualize the results with @MegaVote, open the posted message's dropdown menu and select the @MegaVote command. MegaVote will create a new Poll/Vote from that message.

HINT: Send yourself a Slack DM to experiment with different formats and emojis. Once the message looks right, turn it into a Poll/Vote and post it to any public channel.

Create a Poll in Slack from Another Poll

To create a new Poll/Vote quickly, open the dropdown menu on any posted Poll/Vote and select Create new Vote.... A Poll/Vote creation form will open so you can compose and post the new Poll/Vote.

Create a Poll in Slack by Cloning an Existing Poll

To clone a posted Poll/Vote, open its dropdown menu and select Create similar Vote.... A creation form will open with the original Poll/Vote's information already copied. You can edit it or post it immediately.

HINT: If you find a useful Poll/Vote in one channel and want to reuse it elsewhere, clone it and choose the channels where you want to post it.
